The Mentoring and Students’ Services Unit (MSSU) of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) on Friday, July 28, 2023, hosted a compelling round table discussion titled "Transforming Businesses with Data Analytics and AI: The Role of Industry and Academia."
The summit showcased captivating keynote speeches and panel discussions by tech and industry experts, including Dr. Emmanuel K. Awuni, a Data Scientist and Senior Lecturer at UGBS; Professor Ernest Christian Winful, Dean of International Programmes and Institutional Cooperation at Accra Technical University; Ms. Doreen Ansah-Appiah, a Data Analyst at MTN Ghana; and the guest speaker, Kwesi Kwofie, CEO of Dataware Tech.In his introductory remarks, Professor Bawole highlighted on the profound value of artificial intelligence (AI) in accelerating work processes. He emphasised Africa's need to rapidly catch up in the realm of AI, having fallen behind. He further elaborated on UGBS's AI-related curricula, which encompass a PhD program and an MSc in Business Analytics and Management Science. He underscored the school's collaborative efforts with AIDEC, AFOS, and IIPGH, which further enhance its capabilities in the AI domain.
Mr. Kwesi Kwofie, CEO of Dataware Tech and the guest speaker for the event followed with his insights, pointing out that organisations are significantly underutilising AI technology. He highlighted the potential of predictive AI, exemplified by the Chime predictive AI, which enables service providers to anticipate customer preferences through historical behaviour analysis. Mr. Kwofie also delved into AI's potential to open new avenues of employment, particularly in the areas of data security and privacy.
The event continued with the other speakers speaking on a range of essential topics throughout the event. They discussed the gap between AI-related curricula and real-world applications and proposed strategies to bridge this gap. They further emphasised the potential of AI to create fresh opportunities and their implications for industries and academia. All the speakers shared personal experiences, underlining the significance of Data Analytics and AI in both educational and industry settings.
