Professor Ahenkan research interests span sustainable development, green economy, climate change, public administration, governance, and environmental policy in Africa. His scholarly work contributes to advancing knowledge on sustainability transitions, climate change impacts, and governance reforms in developing countries. is a prolific researcher with over 100 publications in high-impact journals and edited volumes. His research continues to influence national and international policy discussions, reinforcing his role as a leading authority in sustainable development, climate finance, and climate policy.
Albert Ahenkan
Professor Albert Ahenkan is a distinguished scholar and Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS). He is widely recognized for his expertise in sustainable development, climate change, climate finance, ESG, the green and circular economy, green finance, energy transitions, and climate change policy. He currently serves as the Head of the Department of Public Administration at UGBS, where he provides academic leadership and contributes to advancing research and capacity development in sustainability and governance. Professor Ahenkan obtained his PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium, in 2011. Over the course of his academic career, he has established himself as a leading figure in sustainability research, with an extensive portfolio of publications and engagement in national and international policy dialogues. His work is grounded in a commitment to fostering evidence-based solutions to sustainable development challenges, particularly in the context of emerging and developing economies.
His consultancy and advisory experience span several prominent global institutions, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), GIZ, NEPAD, UNITAR, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), the Ministry of Finance, Ghana Wildlife Society, and the Africa Wildlife Foundation. Through these roles, he has contributed significantly to climate finance, green finance, sustainable finance, ESG frameworks, and broader sustainable development initiatives. His insights have helped shape major national policies on climate action and green economic transitions.
Professor Ahenkan has led numerous high-impact national and international consultancy assignments. He spearheaded the development of the Climate Change Project Prioritisation Tool and Guideline, climate finance tracking tools, and the National Designated Authority (NDA) Operational Manual for the Green Climate Fund, all for the Ministry of Finance. He also led a green finance study for UNEP and conducted the study on the Current State of Sustainable Finance in the Ghanaian Financial Sector, along with training programmes for Specialized Deposit-Taking and Non-Bank Financial Institutions financed by GIZ. In addition, he developed climate finance training modules for SMEs and MFIs under GHAMFIN and carried out a comprehensive assessment of the potential of Ghana’s green business sector. Across these engagements, his work consistently strengthens the financial sector’s capacity for sustainable, green, and climate-responsive investment.
In his role as National Consultant, he played a pivotal role in developing the Accra City Climate Finance Plan under the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. He further led capacity-building and knowledge management initiatives to support civil society organizations in implementing Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). His advisory contributions to USAID’s Policy LINK initiative, the EPA-Ghana, and Ghana’s MRV of Finance Baseline Study (funded by the Government of Canada) have enhanced climate governance, institutional capacity, and the enabling environment for private-sector climate investment.
Beyond consultancy, Professor Ahenkan is a prolific researcher with more than 90 publications in high-impact international journals, books, and edited volumes. His work has shaped academic and policy debates on sustainable development, climate change, green economy, and public administration in Africa. His contributions to scholarship and policy practice have earned him recognition both locally and internationally, solidifying his status as a leading authority in sustainable development, climate finance, and climate policy on the continent.
